Project Description:
Sydney Pressed Metal worked with builder Mainbrace Constructions on the repair, restorations and additions to the copper soffit linings to the David Jones building in Sydney CBD. Work included reproduction of original design Gravelstone which was pressed in copper to exact imperial measurements to replace and repair damaged original panels and continuation of the pressed metal soffit.
Each new copper panel was individually treated to age the copper panels matching the patina of the original material. The continuation of the copper soffit linings were finished using the Lambton Batten also pressed in copper and indiviually treated to age to match original. The Gravelstone panel was pressed on three sides with reel and bead edging to accomodate the original layout of the pattern and new was matched seamelssly with old.
New moulds for the bell shaped finials that were situated in each corner section of the soffit were reproduced in copper requiring 4 pieces to recreate – 3 pieces for the skirt and one piece for the spire cap which was turned from solid copper. The pieces were then soldered together to form the complete element.
The most challenging component for the Sydney Pressed Metal team was matching the copper patina to the original panels. This was completed to exacting standards and a seamless finish. Installing the pressed copper panels at night under low light conditions while challenging, was achieved professionally and to schedule.
